An Inside kind of day (week)

It's ok with me as I am no longer a galavanter extrordinair, like I once was. Traffic & people have cured me of that.  We've got the smoke from the wild fires here in Ohio and I guess even down to Florida I have heard. Yesterday was the worse I've seen it, today air quality is poor. I went out yesterday, I needed crochet thread. Early morning quick trip.

Today I organised the sturdy pantry, sometimes things get tossed on there and if you don't know what you have, you get many of one item, and not enough of the other. Kitchen cabinet pantry needs sorted also, for another day. I will continue to build it.

I canned when I was younger, donated it to charity shop. It was a safety issue for me, and was difficult for me to lift etc. I find other ways to preserve, and stock up now.

Our pantry is in the basement,( something I should like to change, but it would require moving) making best use of shelving we've had for years. I've always had a pantry. When our boys were small I made sure  they would always have food if we couldn't get out to get some.

Now there are many other issues besides not being able to get out.

I get the pantry items at various stores, and my husband gets the meats at the big box chain. They have good deals on meats often, BOGO. We take advantage of that and take the time to make many meals with those purchases.

I'm flash freezing, and dehydrating what I can, making use of the hay while the sun shines. It was good advise then, as it is now?

I'd like to stock up on taters & onions. If any of you do this, I'd be interested in hearing how/where you keep them over winter time. Well I've got a few more chores to be done before I settle down with the hook, I'll talk to you next time.

I used to do an incredible amount of canning but like you, I have given my canning supplies to the thrift shop. We have a freezer in the buttery and another one outside. We share the latter with Son & his wife. So mainly now I freeze and/or stock up on special deals which I portion out for us two. GM

We don't have a perfect place for spuds and onions. Last year we hand onions into Jan/Feb? Can't remember exactly. Cool and dry for both but not together.
So sorry you are getting that smoke. That gets old fast and makes it difficult to get out and do anything.

I have my pantry pretty much scattered throughout the house. Canning has finally been moved upstairs into the last 3 shelves of the linen closet. I have a small cupboard pantry on the other side and that holds my extra cans, syrups, noodles, rice and boxes of juice and broth. The one in the kitchen holds the items I move from those pantries.

Then I have shelves in one bedroom closet that hold my cleaning supplies, paper goods, and personal care items.

God bless.

We had the smoke yesterday too. So bad, I did not work in the garden. Today it's a lot better though. Can't help with the potato/onion question. We do not have a basement or root cellar. I have in the past, canned potatoes and dehydrated both potatoes (sliced) and onions(diced/powder).
