This posting was one I did a few years back, still relevant today, even more in these uncertain times.
Probably singing to the choir here, just in case here is food for thought literally.
Pantries were born out of necessity, back in the day.
Pantries were born out of necessity, back in the day.
There wasn't a grocery store or food place around, people made do with what they grew, harvested, and preserved.
I've always kept a sturdy pantry. I don't can anymore. But I do keep it stocked up for time such as we are in now, or will be in at some time. My husband calls it the 2 bin system. Always have a spare.
When the stores have sales on canned vegatables or soup, pasta get a few more items. TP same thing, dish soap, coffee..
My pantry is a shelf in the basement, and a kitchen cupboard upstairs. It's not a showpiece, but it's functional, and serves us well, provides peace of mind.
We have an extra freezer, I buy meat when they have BOGO, and make many meals out of one cut of meat. Whole chicken same thing. Soup and a meal out of the same bird.
Build the pantry every shopping trip, an item or two. It keeps it simple.
We have lost, well I shouldn't we, but there is a entire generation of people who have no idea that people lived without fast food, and grocery stores on every corner. These folks have no idea how to cook, prepare, shop, or save for a rainy day.
This causes what we are seeing now with this Panic shopping..
What? is this all about. I realize some don't have storage space, as we are limited here, but I have and you have cupboards, or a garage or basement, or even a closet where you can store extra non perishable foods & supplies.
What happened to soap and water? Why? is there a run on hand sanitizer?
My husband was behind a lady in a store who purchased ( I kid you not) $130.00 worth of hand sanitizer. I personally don't like hand sanitizer, I don't get the clean feeling like I do with soap and water. I do carry it, but use it after I've pushed a cart. I wash when I get home, with soap and water.
I'm not a germaphobe. I grew up in the 60's..we drank from the garden hose, we caught colds, we ate real food, played in the dirt, and used soap and water, I live to tell about it. I'm 62.
I just don't get it. I am living in a world I know longer recognize.
Then you have your staple items.....always have these in the house, you can do alot with flour.
Flour, Yeast, Sugar, Eggs, butter, milk, coffee & water.
always every shopping trip these are on the list.

Don't Panic-Be Prepared.

I have just this morning been to the supermarket to be met by many empty shelves. No soap, hand sanitizer, pasta, loo roll etc. I have very limited storage but still, fortunately, had no need to buy any of these things. I don't have a large pantry but I do take care to buy in items when I see they are running low. X
You are a prepared not panicked. That is what it is all about, just being prepared enough to get you through. Thank you stopping over Jules.
I too keep a pantry. What folks are buying in panic mode, I find comical. Perhaps that's not a nice thing to say because it's sad really. Wash a fresh picked carrot with garden hose - the perfect treat ๐๐๐
And we lived! It is sad for those buying in panic mode. It's sad they were never taught, or have lived so well they think it will always be. Thanks for stopping over.
WONDERFUL and timely post!!!!
We always try to keep items "ahead." So in ordinary life, you don't run into that "oh no, this is the last such-and-such." It's common sense.
Yes... Prepare... Don't panic.
And live one's ordinary life. With common sense precautions added, at this time.
Gentle hugs...
Yes,it's so simple...
I have the same system as you. I keep at least one back-up of things we use all the time. Like PB, honey, TP etc.
$130 worth of hand sanitizer? Crazy.
I love my walk-in pantry but it's not any fuller than it was before. I hope this panic buying ends soon. Actually, I hope this Coronavirus germ ends soon too.
I hope the coverage of it ends sooner, it's wall to wall, I have shut it off. Life is happening outside, the flu happens everyday, everywhere.
People are going slightly crazy and really do not know what to stock up on. Panic has been fueling many people's purchases.
Timely post for sure.
If one is prepared panic is not necessary. People need to shut off the endless barage of reporting. Thank you for stopping over Jackie
Indeed a most timely post, but I’m afraid the younger generation is so plugged in, they don’t know how to exist without the continual fear-mongering in the media. So glad there are still people like us who can turn it off and walk away, and find different ways to enjoy their day. Wonderful post! Such precious memories.
