Winter Sowing has begun

Howdy Homebodies!

Are  you thinking garden & seeds yet? Some of you may be knee deep in snow, or have a ground cover of snow and ice like me. 

I'm thinking seeds & planting.

Last year I tried the winter sowing method, I got 3 brussel sprout plants out of it, and they all were productive.

I'm going to give it a go again this year. 

I want to grow some pickles, and some dill. Going to start there. But first..have to save a few plastic milk jugs which won't be hard around here. Planting collards when the time is right had a good yield of those last year, they are delicious & healthy, I grew from a nursery plant not seeds.

Have you heard of this method? Or tried this?

 

That seed sits in soil in the milk jug in the cold months, as the temperature rises, the milk jug acts as a greenhouse, warms the soil and encourages the seed to begin production. 

By the time it warms up, the plants will have grown inside the jug, have multiple sets of leaves and be ready to transplant.

Another very interesting thing I saw yesterday was how much  you can grow just by using the scraps you have in the house that you would toss. In addition to that using these scraps make delicious broth packed with nutrients. I save celery,onions,carrots and freeze them. Great for soups. 

Trying this with the cabbage end in a little water, 

I'm hoping it will be ready right around spring planting time. 

It is 21 degrees, full on sun and no wind. It is cold but refreshing.
