The calender says.....it's the 1st day of fall?

That is not what is going on outside my window. Another day in the 90's here in NE Ohio. Our squirrel neighbors are busy again today foraging and burying their bounty. They seem this year to really making a career out of it. Hmm. What kind of winter are we going to experience?
For now, I'm enjoying the last few days of going outside with no coat, hat, boots or gloves. Soon it will be sweater and sweatshirt weather, it's just not going to be today .

A few more weeks and I'll plant some garlic before the frost, which is Oct 15th in our area.

Not much on tap for today,  bbq ribs will be on the grill, DH like to grill out. We've got pineapple upside down cake I made yesterday for desert.

I'm looking forward to getting a cornstalk and some pumpkins. Our boys still like to carve pumpkins. I'll usually bake some cookies and we have cider. That won't be toward the end of next month, by then...ahem...there should be a chill about the air.  I like fall and winter cooking the best, soups, casseroles, baking, stick to your ribs and warm your inside food. So much to look forward to as we move through the season.

Well, Happy 1st day of Fall, thank you for stopping over.

Take care my friends.

  1. Oh, my! And here we've been complaining because our "sweatshirt weather" came and then left again in the blink of an eye and our daytime temps have been in the high 60s and VERY humid. Whatever would we do (complain a lot) if our temps were still as high as yours?

Yes, I do love fall and winter cooking and baking more than any other time of year. At this moment I have my biggest stock pot simmering on the stove making turkey bone broth with the bones and skin and odd bits from a turkey I baked this past week. Shades of goodness to come!

  2. I was just thinking this week that I should make sure the area where the garlic gets planted be raked and ready. The heads of garlic last season grew large but only had 3 or at the most 4 cloves each. I wonder how that will be for planting them!
Our weather went from hot and extremely dry to chilly and drizzle every day almost over night. Good thing I have warm cardigans!!

  3. Funny Fall Weather here too! ,-) Sat. and Sun. have been warm, without humidity, and simply gorrrrrrrgeous! Love being able to have the patio door open, in the evenings, when we sit in the hearth room. Haven't been able to, but again, we can.

Also looking forward to the first fire in the fireplace. Not time yet!!! It's a gas fireplace now, but it's still pretty. It was a simple old fashioned fire place, when we built it, 50 years ago. When fuel was scarce, we had a small stove installed there. And I used to keep that going. It was not fun, and I was glad to get rid of it!!!

Then we converted to gas. Were lucky enough,to get a lovely set of real looking "logs," so it's very nice. Even throws a little heat.

But we only use it, between seasons. After summer, and before winter. After winter, and before real warmth returns. Because a fireplace actually sucks heat out, of a room.
